One of the few creation myths written in the Old Kingdom (2686-2181 B.C.) as an attempt to explain the creation of the universe. The Ennead is told in two intervals of nine gods at a time: the Greater Ennead and the Lesser Ennead.

The Greater Ennead tells of the god Atum, who willed himself into existence, or, as another theory states, he was created by "Nun, the waters of chaos" (Remler, 79).
