Scarabs

These beetle amulets were symbols used by the Egyptians and mainly by the living as a way of symbolizing royal and diplomatic success. The amulets were made in the shape of beetles and effort was made to make them look realistic, indicating the head, wings, and legs. The bottoms of the amulets were typically flat and inscribed with symbols that could be used to make stamps. The material used to make the scarabs were stone or an Egypti

an stone-ceramic called faience. They were later painted blue and fired to make them last longer and give them a glossy finish, as well as to cook the ceramic. Even though many of the scarabs found appear to be white or brown, they were typically painted in light colors but become discolored over time.
