Persephone/Proserpina was Zeus/Jupiter and Demeter/Ceres' daughter. Hades/Pluto, god of the underworld, fell in love with her and abducted her as it can be seen on the image (Image: Wikimedia Commons).
Short after, her mother was devastated and did not make the earth grow anything. Zeus found where she was and demanded Hades to return Persephone. (Image: Wikimedia Commons)
He did, but offered her pomergranate seeds and she ate them; she was tied to the underworld because of this: she would spend half a year with her mother and half a year with her husband. When she is away, Demeter is sad and the earth does not produce fruit (autumn and winter) and it does when she is with her daughter (spring and summer).
